Okehampton Men in Sheds are proud to support our local young people in various ways, e.g. woodwork workshops which foster skills and learning across the generations. We are particularly proud of the young man in this photo, Johnathan Battershall-Reid, age 14, who attends Okehampton College. John has been been volunteering with us as part his Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. John has also used the opportunity to learn various woodwork skills too! Phil Bush who runs Okehampton Men in Sheds said “John has been amazing – always so enthusiastic he has learnt so quickly – he has been a great help to us in the shed and we’ve all enjoyed supporting him with his award”.

John has now completed his volunteering hours but he says he enjoys coming to the Shed so much he is still attending just for fun now!  The next stage of his Duke of Edinburgh Award is to be part of team undertaking a 2 day camping weekend on the Moor, including first-aid, survival skills and map reading.   Once this is completed – we look forward to celebrating with John as we have no doubt he will pass with flying colours! John’s Mum said “ I would like to thank Okehampton Men in Sheds for being so good to John and allowing him to volunteer and learn woodwork for his award; it has really helped his confidence and DIY skills. We are very proud of him”. We send our heartfelt congratulations to John– and wish him the very  best of luck with the final stage of his award!
